The wheat bran, sharps and residues market in Egypt expanded from 2.7 million tonnes in 2018 to nearly 3 million tonnes by 2019. This initial growth was driven by government measures to secure domestic wheat supplies, including a temporary ban on wheat flour exports that redirected milling activity inward and a price stabilization policy for subsidized bread that ensured steady wheat consumption and consistent bran output as a by-product.

The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 reduced bread consumption and temporarily disrupted supply chains, leading to a slight contraction in bran production. Recovery began in 2021 with the introduction of the 'Future of Egypt' system, which regulated wheat purchases to limit price volatility and directed imported wheat towards feed production. The market regained momentum in 2022 as Egypt diversified its wheat import sources away from Russia and Ukraine following the war, securing stable grain inflows for milling and increasing the availability of bran for the animal feed sector.

Production and market volume reached a new high of over 3 million tonnes in 2023. This was primarily due to the government's announcement to purchase 3.6 million tonnes of local wheat to reduce import dependency, which boosted domestic milling activity and consequently the supply of bran as a milling residue.

After two years of growth, Egypt's production of wheat bran, sharps, and residues declined. In 2020, the country produced 2 774 K t, which was 3.8% lower than in 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production increased by 7.1%, with a compound annual growth rate of 2.3%. The highest production level was recorded in 2019 at 2 884 K t, marking the largest annual increase of 9.5%.

Egypt's wheat bran, sharps, and residues production value rose for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the output was valued at 440.3 M $ US, a 0.9% increase year-over-year. From 2017 to 2020, production value grew by 34%, equivalent to an annualized rate of 10.3%.

In 2020, Egypt exported 0.4 K t of wheat bran, sharps, and residues, a sharp increase of 666.9% compared to 2019. The largest decline occurred in 2019, falling by 99.4%.
