Over the 2018-2024 period, the Romanian market for wheat bran displayed notable volatility in physical terms. The market volume started at 392 thousand tons in 2018, dipped to 352.6 thousand tons the following year, and rebounded to 392.6 thousand tons in 2020. It then climbed to a peak of 411.4 thousand tons in 2021, stabilized around 410 thousand tons in 2022, slipped slightly to 404.5 thousand tons in 2023, and ended the period at 434.4 thousand tons in 2024.

In monetary value, the market exhibited different dynamics. After a drop from 56.2 million USD in 2018 to 48.1 million USD in 2019, value recovered to 56.2 million USD in 2020. A substantial surge occurred in 2021, pushing the market value to 75.2 million USD, and it further increased to 79.9 million USD in 2022. The following years saw a decline to 68.2 million USD in 2023 and a stabilization at 67.7 million USD in 2024. This divergence between volume and value trends points to independent price movements or changes in the quality mix of products traded.

Domestic production ranged from 326.7 to 360 thousand tons, while imports more than doubled from 48.5 thousand tons in 2018 to 97.3 thousand tons in 2023 before easing to 94.2 thousand tons in 2024. Exports showed wide swings, from 16.5 thousand tons in 2018 to a high of 40.6 thousand tons in 2019 and a low of 5.3 thousand tons in 2024, contributing to the net supply available on the domestic market.

In 2020, Romania's production of wheat bran, sharps and residues reached a value of 53 703 K $ US, showing a solid 10.8% increase from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production grew by 13.4%, with an average annual growth rate of 4.3%. The most significant decline occurred in 2019, when production fell by 7.6%.

Following two years of decline, wheat bran, sharps and residues production in Romania rebounded in 2020. That year, Romania produced 359.6 K t, marking a 6.6% increase compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production decreased by 2.4%, equivalent to an annualized decline of 0.8%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2019 at 337.2 K t, which represented a 6.3% decline from the previous year.

The market exhibited significant volatility during this period. Romania exported 37 649 t of wheat bran, sharps and residues in 2020, representing a modest 7.3% decrease from 2019. The lowest export volume occurred in 2018 at 16 458 t, while the highest was recorded in 2019 at 40 628 t. Between these two years, export levels fluctuated by a factor of 2.5, with 2019 showing the largest increase at 146.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, Qatar, Turkey, and Bulgaria consistently served as the main destinations for Romania's wheat bran, sharps and residues exports in volume terms. Qatar accounted for 49.7% of exports, Turkey for 28.2%, and Bulgaria for 11.4%. Together, these three countries represented 89.2% of total export flows.

Market performance showed noticeable fluctuations throughout the period. In 2020, Romania exported 7 242 K $ US worth of wheat bran, sharps and residues, indicating a 7.5% decline from 2019. The lowest export value was recorded in 2018 at 2 349 K $ US, while the highest occurred in 2019 at 7 826 K $ US. Between these two years, export values varied by a factor of 3.3, with 2019 experiencing the largest increase at 233.2%.

Romania's imports of wheat bran, sharps and residues increased for the second consecutive year in 2020, reaching 70 683 t. This represented a 26.2% gain compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports grew by 36.9%, equivalent to an annualized rate of 11.0%. The lowest import volume was recorded in 2018 at 48 451 t, which marked a 6.1% decline from the previous year.

From 2017 to 2020, Hungary and Moldova accounted for the majority of Romania's wheat bran, sharps and residues imports in volume terms, while other markets played a less significant role.

Romania's imports of wheat bran, sharps and residues increased for the third consecutive year in 2020, reaching 9 756 K $ US. This marked a 30.4% increase compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports grew by 77.6%, equivalent to an annualized rate of 21.1%.

Throughout 2017-2020, Hungary and Moldova remained the principal sources for Romania's wheat bran, sharps and residues imports in value terms. Together, these two countries accounted for 92.8% of total import flows, with other partners each holding significantly smaller shares.
