Between 2018 and 2023, the market for wheat bran, sharps and residues in Trinidad and Tobago showed a general downward trend in both volume and value. This decline followed a temporary peak in 2021, when market volume reached 21 272 t, supported by a surge in imports to 2 775 t.

A key shift occurred from 2022, when government policy began promoting flour alternatives to reduce wheat import dependency. Grants covering up to 75% of machinery costs for producing alternatives from local root crops aimed to stimulate domestic output, potentially reducing the milling of wheat and the subsequent supply of its by-products like bran. Concurrently, regional millers reported production cost increases exceeding 40% due to global disruptions from the Russia-Ukraine conflict and COVID-19, alongside rising logistics and energy expenses. These combined pressures contributed to the contraction in market volume to 19 677 t in 2022 and a further drop to 19 150 t in 2023.

By 2023, domestic production had declined to 17 462 t, continuing the multi-year slide from 19 317 t in 2018. The market value followed suit, falling to $3.4 million, reflecting both lower volumes and prevailing cost pressures.
