In 2018-2019, the Egyptian cottonseed oil-cake market expanded from 53 111 t to 72 946 t. This growth was driven by the modernization of oil extraction plants, the adoption of solvent extraction technologies to increase oil yield, and the entry of new players into the market. Government support, including incentives for investment in modern equipment, helped expand production capacity.

In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic caused disruptions in global supply chains, delaying the import of equipment and raw materials, which reduced the market volume to 67 447 t. In 2021, a further decline to 50 135 t was linked to rising energy and raw material prices, which increased production costs and hindered recovery.

From 2022 onward, the market recovered, reaching 53 082 t and then growing to 62 115 t in 2023. This rebound was supported by new Egyptian legislation on food safety and packaging quality, which stimulated additional investment in plant upgrades. The entry of new players and the expanded use of solvent extraction technologies also contributed to higher oil-cake production.

Egypt's cottonseed oil-cake production rose for two consecutive years before declining. In 2020, production reached 41 900 tonnes, marking a 42.7% decrease from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, overall production grew by 21%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 6.6%. The peak was recorded in 2019 at 73 100 tonnes, while the largest annual increase occurred in 2018, at 53.3%.
