Egypt's linseed oil-cake production declined from 11 000 t in 2018 to 8 000 t in 2020. This drop was driven by the return of the Tanta Flax company to state ownership, which cut its operating capacity to just 10%, and by a long-term reduction in flax cultivation area from 44 000 feddans in 1991 to 12 000 feddans by 2016. The situation worsened in 2020 when prices for edible oil raw materials surged by 40‑70%, raising production costs for oil-cake.

Output continued to fall, reaching 7 200 t in 2021, even as the Ministry of Supply launched a price-reduction initiative for edible oils. New food‑labeling requirements also obliged producers to adapt packaging for linseed oil-cake. In 2022, production stabilized around 7 000 t, while the market became more concentrated—five companies, including Arma, came to dominate the oils sector and controlled the supply chains for oil-cake.

A partial recovery occurred in 2023, with production rising to 7 900 t. This turnaround coincided with the introduction of a cash‑support scheme for edible oils, which boosted demand for oil-cake in integrated food and feed industries. The Ministry of Agriculture also included linseed oil-cake in a localization project for edible‑oil production, encouraging the expansion of dedicated processing lines.

Egypt's linseed oil-cake production fell for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 8 000 tonnes, marking a slight decrease of 5.9% from 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 8.8%, which translates to an average annual increase of 2.9%. The highest output was in 2018 at 10 950 tonnes, when production surged by 49.0%. The sharpest drop occurred in 2019, with a decline of 22.4%.
