Earlier Report Observations
Between 2018 and 2021, the market volume for shelled almonds in Western Europe expanded from 155.4 thousand tons to 189.5 thousand tons, while market value peaked at 1.12 billion dollars in 2020 before easing slightly. During this period, unfavorable weather conditions significantly hampered the organic almond harvest in Spain, leading to sharp price increases for organic almonds and highlighting supply vulnerabilities in the region.
The market turned downward in 2022, with volume contracting to 157.5 thousand tons and value dropping to 891 million dollars. A major transport crisis in the Middle East caused significant disruptions to goods traffic, affecting demand for almonds from the United States and indirectly impacting the European market's supply chain.
The decline continued into 2023, with market volume falling further to 147.3 thousand tons and value to 741 million dollars. Import prices for almonds in Germany decreased by approximately 10%, altering cost structures for trade. At the same time, Spain maintained the largest almond cultivation area in Europe, strengthening the long-term production base in Western Europe.
