Earlier Report Observations

The shelled almond market in Oceania expanded significantly from 2018 to 2021, with market volume rising from 45.1 thousand tons to 83.4 thousand tons. This growth was driven by increased global almond production, particularly from the United States, which enhanced supply availability. Concurrently, consumer shifts towards healthier and organic foods during the COVID-19 pandemic boosted demand. Investments in local Australian production capacity and the emergence of new almond-based snack segments further stimulated market expansion.

By 2022, market volume dipped to 77.9 thousand tons as exports surged, outpacing domestic consumption growth. Major Australian players continued to expand their production facilities to meet regional demand, while international price fluctuations and exchange rate movements affected import costs. Stricter labeling and traceability regulations for food products, including almonds, were progressively adopted to ensure quality and safety.

In 2023, market volume contracted sharply to 25.5 thousand tons, primarily due to a substantial increase in exports to 82.7 thousand tons and a reduction in production to 103.4 thousand tons. Import levels remained relatively low at 4.8 thousand tons.
