Earlier Report Observations

The in-shell hazelnut market in Western Europe opened the period with a value of 51.6 million US dollars in 2018, supported by rapid growth in global hazelnut trade and expanded cultivation areas in France. A contraction followed in 2019, bringing the market down to 36.9 million US dollars. By 2020, market value recovered to 46.4 million US dollars, fueled by rising consumer demand for organic and sustainably certified hazelnuts, as well as the development of new product segments like vegan spreads and premium baked goods.

In 2021, the market grew further to 52.8 million US dollars despite increasing production costs due to higher agricultural input and energy prices, partly offset by more mechanized and organized farming practices in Europe. The following year saw a sharp drop to 38.6 million US dollars, primarily caused by climate change impacts and pest infestations that significantly reduced French hazelnut yields, compounded by restrictive EU legislation on plant protection products.

A production crisis in Italy and Turkey in 2023, triggered by frosts, water stress, and Asian bug infestations, led to record hazelnut price increases of over 50%, driving the Western European market value up to 59.3 million US dollars. Into 2024, factors pointed to continued production declines in France due to massive pest attacks and adverse weather, keeping prices at historically high levels, while major players like Ferrero invested in research and supply chain diversification to mitigate future risks.
