Earlier Report Observations

The market volume for shelled almonds in Cyprus remained around 1 100 t between 2018 and 2020, with notable volatility in almond import prices during these years. A contraction to 975 t occurred in 2021, a period which saw a significant drop in import prices for almonds.

A sharp expansion followed, with the market volume jumping to 1 429 t in 2022 and rising further to 1 462 t in 2023. This growth period coincided with global supply chain disruptions and increased production costs that affected almond markets worldwide in 2022.

Domestic production increased steadily from 128 t to 217 t over 2018–2023 but remained a minor component of the market, which continued to depend on imports from Greece, Bulgaria, and Spain throughout the period.

Cyprus saw its shelled almond production rise for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 196.6 tonnes, marking an 8.0% increase from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, production grew by 48.1%, averaging an annual growth rate of 14.0%. The lowest output was in 2018 at 128.4 tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 3.3%. In contrast, 2019 recorded the biggest jump with a 41.8% increase.

Exports shelled almonds from Cyprus

Cyprus experienced a third consecutive year of declining shelled almond exports. In 2020, exports totaled 1.3 tonnes, reflecting a sharp 25.3% drop from 2019. From 2017 to 2020, exports plummeted by 96.9%, with a compound annual growth rate of -68.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, Italy, the Netherlands, and Greece were the top destinations for Cyprus's shelled almond exports by volume. Italy accounted for 40.9% of exports, the Netherlands for 39.0%, and Greece for 19.3%, together making up 99.2% of total export flows.

Cyprus's shelled almond imports declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, import volume was 899.2 tonnes, remaining largely unchanged from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, imports increased by 12.9%, averaging an annual growth rate of 4.1%. The peak was in 2018 at 983.0 tonnes, which also saw the largest increase of 23.4%. The biggest drop occurred in 2019 with an 8.4% decrease.

Over the 2017-2020 period, import value rose by 8.1%, with a compound annual growth rate of 2.6%. The highest value was in 2018 at 7 058 thousand US dollars, which also recorded the largest increase of 28.8%. The most significant decline was in 2019 at 11.9%.
