Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2020, the poultry meat and offal market in Vietnam expanded steadily. Growth was initially driven by a national flock exceeding 500 million birds and the adoption of higher-yield local breeds, which increased domestic production. The African swine fever outbreak in 2019 shifted consumer demand from pork to poultry, further boosting market volume. Despite the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, imports of frozen chicken surged to over 140 thousand tons, supplementing domestic supply and supporting continued market growth.

Between 2021 and 2023, market growth was sustained by consistently high imports of frozen chicken, which reached nearly 245 thousand tons in 2022. Concurrent investments in modern slaughterhouses and cold storage facilities, along with stricter international certification standards, enabled producers to scale up operations and access new export markets like Japan and Hong Kong. By 2023, the national flock had grown to 551.4 million head, and the number of large-scale farms increased, cementing the expansion of domestic production and overall market volume.
