Earlier Report Observations
From 2018 to 2022, production of horse, donkey and mule meat in Vietnam showed variability, ranging from 1 350 t to 1 439 t, with the highest output recorded in 2020.
In 2023, despite a drop in market volume to 1 303 t, the market saw the introduction of new products like smoked dried horse meat and expanded offerings of processed items from companies such as Ngô Gia and Quang Phú Food Co. The period also witnessed a rise in horse farming, particularly of imported breeds, and growing consumer awareness of the nutritional benefits of horse meat.
By 2024, Vietnam began importing horse meat, with 933 t entering the market, while domestic supply was bolstered by a near-doubling of horse herds in some provinces over two years, providing tens of tons of meat daily. Online platforms also saw increased activity, with sellers offering frozen horse meat at low prices, raising concerns about product quality.
