Earlier Report Observations

The poultry meat market in Oman saw its volume grow from 115.9 thousand tons in 2018 to 122.5 thousand tons in 2019, then drop to 99.3 thousand tons in 2020. It stabilized around 99 thousand tons in 2021 and 2022 before falling sharply to 53.6 thousand tons in 2023. In value terms, the market reached 182.9 million dollars in 2019, fell to 132.8 million dollars in 2020, recovered to 177.7 million dollars by 2022, and then eased to 168.6 million dollars in 2023.

The steep decline in market volume to 53.6 thousand tons in 2023 was driven by a sharp drop in imports to 75.8 thousand tons, while domestic production held steady at 13.7 thousand tons. This shift occurred as the country achieved over 80% self-sufficiency in poultry meat, reducing reliance on imported supplies. Concurrently, the government diversified red meat import sources across 21 origins, including opening imports of chilled veal from Egypt and fresh lamb and goat meat from Syria, which enhanced market flexibility and likely redirected some consumer demand toward other meat types.

By 2024, frozen poultry meat was available at excellent prices through traders such as Al-Majd Al-Thani Trading. Increased supply chain complexity raised the need for longer meat preservation, boosting frozen product sales. Multiple import options from various countries continued to strengthen market resilience in meeting domestic demand.
