Earlier Report Observations
Copra production in Mauritius showed considerable volatility from 2018 to 2023. Output began at 17.7 metric tons in 2018 but fell sharply to 13.7 metric tons the following year. This decline aligned with a broad increase in production and operational costs across local industries, driven by rising freight expenses and sustained wage growth. A modest recovery to 14.4 metric tons occurred in 2020, even as the Covid-19 pandemic disrupted global supply chains and elevated logistics costs.
The market contracted again in 2021, dropping to 11.7 metric tons, as prolonged pandemic-related disruptions affected labor availability and inflationary pressures reduced domestic purchasing power. However, production rebounded to 13.7 metric tons in 2022, supported by a shift toward domestic sources after the war in Ukraine increased import costs and the depreciation of the Mauritian rupee made foreign supplies more expensive. Growth continued into 2023, reaching 15.9 metric tons, buoyed by strong tourism activity and construction sector demand, which stimulated local agricultural output.
