Earlier Report Observations

Between 2018 and 2020, Indonesia's copra market volume was shaped by international trade dynamics. A surge in export demand from China and Europe drove market growth to 1 725 thousand tons in 2019, stimulating domestic production. The following year, the market contracted to 1 645 thousand tons as the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted global logistics chains, while an oversupply domestically and falling international demand pressured prices and volumes.

From 2021 to 2023, regulatory shifts and evolving demand influenced the market. Stabilization around 1 641 thousand tons in 2021 occurred amidst fluctuating prices, with declining pre-Lunar New Year demand from China offset by growing industrial use of crude coconut oil (CCO) in cosmetics and food. Market volume then rose to 1 766 thousand tons in 2022, supported by revised export regulations under Trade Minister Regulation No. 08/2022, which adjusted tariffs and procedures, alongside weather conditions that boosted local supply. By 2023, the market decreased to 1 671 thousand tons as post-pandemic recovery fueled export volumes, while a national policy promoting CCO for B30 biodiesel blend began enhancing the product's value addition.
