Between 2018 and 2019, the copra market in Southern Asia saw a slight expansion to 915.9 тыс. т, supported by the government's increase in the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for copra, which encouraged coconut farmers to maintain and expand production. This growth was interrupted in 2020 when market volume fell sharply to 760.4 тыс. т as the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted supply chains and reduced production across key coconut-growing regions.

A strong recovery followed in 2021, with market volume surging to 989.6 тыс. т. This rebound was largely driven by a significant rise in imports, responding to increased global and regional demand for coconut oil in the food and cosmetics sectors due to growing health consciousness. Subsequently, market volume declined to approximately 802 тыс. т in 2022 and stabilized around 801 тыс. т in 2023, as climate variability, including droughts and heatwaves in states like Tamil Nadu and Kerala, constrained supply and affected copra quality.

Throughout the period, state-owned agencies NAFED and NCCF played a stabilizing role through active procurement under the Price Support Scheme, especially notable from 2023 onward with increased MSPs. Technological advancements in processing, such as a shift to kiln drying, improved product quality to meet consumer preferences for premium copra products.

Copra production in Southern Asia grew for two consecutive years before declining. In 2019, production reached its peak at 878.0 K t, but then fell to 719.1 K t in 2020, marking a significant 18.1% decrease from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production dropped by 16.5%, with an average annual decline of 5.8%. The largest increase occurred in 2019, when production rose by 1.7%.

Market performance showed noticeable fluctuations. Exports bottomed in 2017 and peaked in 2019, with a 4.6-fold difference between these years. In 2020, Southern Asia's copra exports amounted to 1 664 K $ US, down 67.9% from 2019's peak of 5 189 K $ US. The largest increase occurred in 2019, when export value jumped by 344.6%.

Southern Asia's copra imports totaled 42 334 t in 2020, up 11.6% from 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports decreased by 3.5%, with an average annual decline of 1.2%. The maximum value was recorded in 2018 at 48 114 t, while the minimum was in 2019 at 37 919 t. The largest decline occurred in 2019, when imports fell by 21.2%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Papua New Guinea were the main sources of copra imports to Southern Asia. Indonesia accounted for 53.7% of imports in volume, Malaysia for 14.4%, and Papua New Guinea for 12.3%, together representing 80.4% of total imports.

After two years of reduction, copra import volumes in Southern Asia increased. In 2020, imports reached 38 268 K $ US, a 26.4% rise from the previous year. However, over the 2017-2020 period, imports decreased by 31%, with an average annual decline of 11.6%. The minimum value was recorded in 2019 at 30 269 K $ US, and the largest decline occurred that same year, with a 39.8% drop.

From 2017 to 2020, Indonesia, Malaysia, and Papua New Guinea consistently served as the primary sources for copra imports to Southern Asia in value terms. Indonesia accounted for 54.3% of import value, Malaysia for 15.2%, and Papua New Guinea for 10.3%, together making up 79.9% of total import flows.
