Earlier Report Observations
The Mauritian sugar cane market saw production rise from 3 155 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 3 405 thousand tonnes in 2019. This increase was supported by government financial compensation of 1 250 rupees per tonne for the 2018 harvest, which helped growers cope with low global sugar prices. The 2019 season began with three active mills following the closure of the Médine mill, yet favorable climatic conditions boosted cane development and extraction rates.
Production fell sharply to 2 621 thousand tonnes in 2020 as the cultivated area continued to shrink due to land abandonment, driven by high production costs and competitive pressure from liberalized European sugar production. A modest recovery to 2 670 thousand tonnes occurred in 2021 when sugar prices rose to 16 765 rupees per tonne, partly due to currency depreciation, incentivizing growers. However, output dropped again to 2 257 thousand tonnes in 2022 as the trend of land abandonment persisted.
In 2023, production rebounded to 2 453 thousand tonnes. Exceptionally high international sugar prices of 30 951 rupees per tonne encouraged harvesting efforts. The industry concurrently diversified into higher-value products like special sugars and agricultural rum, while major sugar companies invested in mechanization and pursued Bonsucro certification to access new export markets.
