Earlier Report Observations
From 2018 to 2020, Uzbekistan's wine market volume increased from 9 978 t to 16 376 t, as a sharp drop in exports raised domestic availability. This period was marked by state support for the industry, including agrarian-industrial integration and efforts to attract investment, which fostered the development of new grape varieties and quality wine production at facilities like the Samarkand wine plant.
In 2021, wine production fell by 22.6% to 16 899 t due to unfavorable climatic conditions that affected global grape harvests, though the market size stabilized near 16 177 t as imports rose. The market then contracted sharply to 7 187 t in 2022 when exports surged to 10 810 t, driven by increased demand from Russia where reduced supplies from Europe created an opportunity for Uzbek economy-segment wine, with the 'Wine and Cognac Trust' of Mikhail Fomin becoming a key exporter.
By 2023, market volume further declined to 4 471 t as production dropped to 12 245 t and exports remained high, albeit slightly tempered by softer demand in Russia. The industry continued to focus on quality improvements and international recognition, supported by state policies promoting wine consumption over strong alcohol. By 2024, factors such as shifting consumer preferences toward low-alcohol beverages and ongoing technological advances pointed to continued evolution in the sector.
