Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2021, the wine market in Eastern Asia contracted steadily, with volume falling from 3.3 million tons to 2.63 million tons. This decline was driven by a prolonged adjustment in China's domestic wine industry, where production and sales fell due to intense competition and shifting consumer preferences. The market faced additional pressure from a rapid influx of imported wines, which eroded the share of local brands. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 exacerbated the downturn, as restaurant closures and reduced social gatherings led to a sharp drop in consumption across the region.

In 2022, the market volume rebounded to 2.82 million tons, supported by the global post-pandemic recovery in wine trade. In Japan, the implementation of the EU-Japan EPA agreement boosted imports of European wines, while government initiatives fostered growth in domestic production and an increase in local wineries. However, these gains were partially offset by continued challenges in China, where the market remained under strain. Global factors such as the war in Ukraine, supply chain disruptions, and rising energy costs introduced volatility, contributing to price adjustments and supply constraints.

By 2023, the market volume had retreated again, falling to 2.45 million tons. Structural issues in China persisted, with domestic production declining and imported wines maintaining a dominant share. In Japan, consumer preferences shifted toward higher-quality and diverse offerings, but the overall market size contracted. Simultaneously, the global wine industry faced historically low production levels and rising prices, which dampened consumer purchasing power and added uncertainty to the regional market.
