The wine market volume in Kazakhstan declined by 24% from 2018 to 2023, falling from 118 thousand tons to 90 thousand tons. The sharpest drop occurred in 2019, after which the market showed unstable recovery with a peak in 2022.

The contraction of domestic production, which more than halved from 50 thousand tons to 26 thousand tons, was a key driver of the reduced market volume. Imports, while remaining the main supply source, fluctuated between 54 thousand tons and 81 thousand tons, partially offsetting the production decline.

Growing exports, which increased from a negligible 315 tons to 9 thousand tons, also pressured product availability in the domestic market. By 2023, the market volume stabilized at around 90 thousand tons.

Kazakhstan's wine and wine products production has declined for two consecutive years. In 2020, production reached 43 783 tonnes, down 1.6% from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production grew by 33.9%, with an average annual growth rate of 10.2%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 50 105 tonnes, which represented a significant 53.2% increase. The largest decline occurred in 2019, with an 11.2% drop.

Export volumes showed notable fluctuations during this period. In 2018, exports bottomed out at 315 tonnes, marking the lowest point with a 68.6% decline. By 2020, exports peaked at 5 840 tonnes, representing a dramatic 1,070.1% increase from the previous year. The difference between the 2018 low and 2020 high was 19-fold.

From 2017 to 2020, Russia remained the dominant export destination for wine and wine products from Kazakhstan, accounting for 84.4% of total export volumes. The remaining 15.6% was distributed across various other markets.

Over the 2017-2020 period, imports grew by 33.8%, with an average annual growth rate of 10.2%. The highest import volume was recorded in 2018 at 68 585 tonnes, representing a 47.8% increase. The largest decline occurred in 2019, with a 21.3% drop.

From 2017 to 2020, Russia (22.0% of import volumes), Ukraine (11.9%), and Moldova (10.6%) were important suppliers of wine and wine products to Kazakhstan. However, their combined share reached only 44.4% of total imports, with the remaining 55.6% distributed among many other trading partners.

Russia (17.8% of import value), the United Kingdom (9.6%), and Georgia (8.4%) together accounted for only 35.8% of total imports, with the remaining 64.2% distributed among numerous other suppliers.
