Earlier Report Observations

In 2018, wine production in Moldova reached a record level of 2 million hectoliters, reflected in a value of $218.6 million US, following industry reorganization triggered by Russian embargoes. The National Wine Day event that year gathered dozens of producers, fostering innovation and new product launches on the domestic market. Over the next two years, production gradually declined to $203.5 million US in 2020, while the market size contracted from $54.8 million US in 2018 to $43.7 million US in 2020.

Production recovered to $222.8 million US in 2021 but fell again to $201.7 million US by 2023. A key driver in 2023 was a sharp rise in exports, which grew 24% in value to $203 million US, driven by stronger international demand and strategic focus on EU and American markets. This led to a reduction in the domestic market size to $22.9 million US, as a larger share of production was directed abroad.

In 2024, exports continued to expand, reaching $239.6 million US, fueled by a 610% surge in shipments to the United States due to tariff reductions and sustained demand from Romania, which imported over 10 million liters of wine. Moldovan authorities bolstered the sector by increasing subsidies for vineyard planting and updating legislation on oenological practices, including a ban on new plantings of the Isabella variety, aimed at long-term production development.
