Earlier Report Observations
Between 2018 and 2020, the Belarusian wine and wine products market volume increased from 51 thousand tons to 64 thousand tons, peaking at 67 thousand tons in 2019. This growth was supported by rising production in neighboring countries, which made imports more available, and by local manufacturers introducing innovative technologies and expanding their range with products like fruit brandies. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 created logistical and demand challenges, leading to a slight contraction.
The market volume dropped to 49 thousand tons in 2021, a period during which the industry emphasized local raw material use and saw the emergence of new segments such as wine-based ciders. By 2022, state support for domestic winemaking and continued technological development helped production recover, while a significant decline in exports boosted domestic supply, raising the market volume to 52 thousand tons.
In 2023, market volume rose sharply to 65 thousand tons, driven by higher imports and falling exports. From July 2024, new legislation came into force, introducing stricter quality controls, updated labeling and excise stamp rules, and mandatory training for alcohol sellers, aiming to regulate the market and enhance consumer safety.
