Earlier Report Observations

The Japanese wine market volume contracted from 584.5 thousand tonnes in 2018 to 562.2 thousand tonnes in 2019, while its value rose from 2 753 million to 2 928 million US dollars. This shift toward higher-value sales was driven by the implementation of the Japan-EU Economic Partnership Agreement, which eliminated tariffs on European wines and triggered price reductions, especially for sparkling wines. Simultaneously, new labeling standards for Japanese wine took effect in October 2018, defining domestic wine made exclusively from Japanese grapes and supporting the growth of local wineries.

Market volume continued to decline sharply to 497.8 thousand tonnes in 2020 and 414.8 thousand tonnes in 2021, with value dropping to 2 480 million and 2 003 million US dollars respectively. The global supply-chain crisis, soaring energy prices, and the impact of the Russia-Ukraine war pushed up transportation costs and weakened the yen, leading to widespread price increases and shortages on the Japanese market.

A recovery in restaurant demand sparked a rebound in 2022, lifting market volume to 431.6 thousand tonnes and value to 2 168 million US dollars. Imports of sparkling wine surged by approximately 115% to a record high, and the number of wineries producing 100% Japanese-grape wine doubled. The trend toward organic and sustainable production methods further expanded the market. By 2023, volume softened to 405.5 thousand tonnes, though value continued to climb to 2 229 million US dollars, reflecting a sustained consumer preference for premium offerings.
