The grape wine market in Belarus expanded significantly in 2019, reaching a volume of 99 237 thousand liters valued at $191.4 million, up from 86 445 thousand liters and $167.6 million the previous year.

A multi-year contraction followed from 2020 to 2022. Market volume declined to 87 605 thousand liters, while the market's value fell more sharply, dropping to $120.7 million in 2022 from a peak of $191.4 million.

In 2023, the market volume stabilized at 87 644 thousand liters. However, the market value showed a notable recovery, increasing to $145.4 million.

Belarus's grape wine production declined after two years of growth. In 2019, production reached its peak at 33 970 K l, marking the largest annual increase of 6.3%. However, in 2020, output fell to 30 360 K l, representing a significant 10.6% drop compared to the previous year.

Following a two-year advance, grape wine production in Belarus experienced a decline. In 2019, output peaked at 127.0 M $ US, with the largest annual increase of 7.1%. By 2020, production had decreased to 81.9 M $ US, down 35.6% year-on-year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production fell by 29.1%, corresponding to a compound annual growth rate of -10.8%.

Exports grape wine from Belarus

After a two-year uptick, foreign grape wine supplies from Belarus declined. In 2018, exports saw the largest increase of 19.2%. The peak was reached in 2019 at 3 137 K l, but by 2020, exports had dropped to 2 639 K l, a 15.9% decrease from the previous year. Overall, between 2017 and 2020, exports grew by 17.6%, equating to an annualized rate of 5.6%.

From 2017 to 2020, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Mongolia were the main markets for Belarus's grape wine exports in kind. Ukraine accounted for 46.1% of exports, Kazakhstan for 5.8%, and Mongolia for 3.8%. Together, these three countries represented 55.6% of total export flows.

Grape wine exports from Belarus declined after two years of advance. In 2018, exports recorded the largest increase of 18.8%. The maximum value was achieved in 2019 at 11 729 K $ US, but in 2020, exports fell to 7 115 K $ US, a steep 39.3% drop compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports decreased by 14.9%, with an annualized rate of -5.2%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Ukraine, Kazakhstan, and Mongolia were the largest buyers of grape wine from Belarus in value terms. Ukraine accounted for 23.3% of exports, Kazakhstan for 2.4%, and Mongolia for 1.7%. Collectively, these three markets represented 27.5% of total export value, with numerous smaller partners making up the remainder.

Grape wine shipments to Belarus increased for the second consecutive year. In 2018, imports hit their lowest point at 57 168 K l, with the largest decline of 0.8%. The following year, 2019, saw the largest increase of 19.7%. By 2020, imports had risen to 70 384 K l, up 2.9% from the prior year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports grew by 22.1%, corresponding to a compound annual growth rate of 6.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, imports of grape wine to Belarus in kind were heavily concentrated on Moldova, which accounted for 72.6% of total flows. All other countries combined made up the remaining share.

Grape wine deliveries to Belarus increased for the second consecutive year. In 2018, imports reached their minimum at 58 984 K $ US, with the largest decline of 2.5%. The largest increase occurred in 2019 at 29.1%. By 2020, imports had climbed to 80 714 K $ US, showing a limited improvement of 6.0% over the past year. Between 2017 and 2020, imports rose by 33.5%, equating to an annualized rate of 10.1%.
