The wheat bran, sharps and residues market in Sub-Saharan Africa experienced notable volume fluctuations between 2018 and 2023. Starting at 3,949 thousand tons in 2018, market size contracted to 3,693 thousand tons in 2019, then recovered over the next two years, reaching 3,993 thousand tons in 2021. This recovery was followed by relative stability in 2022 and a sharp decline to 3,595 thousand tons in 2023, the lowest volume recorded in the period.

Domestic production showed a similar pattern, rising from 4,472 thousand tons in 2018 to a peak of 5,002 thousand tons in 2021 before decreasing to 4,715 thousand tons in 2022 and stabilizing near 4,728 thousand tons in 2023. Throughout these years, export volumes consistently surpassed imports, indicating that a significant portion of local output was destined for foreign markets.

Overall, the regional market volume followed a cyclical path, ending the period approximately 354 thousand tons below its 2018 level. The most pronounced contraction occurred in 2023, reflecting a shift in the regional supply-demand balance.

In 2020, the region produced 4 771 thousand tonnes, marking a moderate year-over-year growth of 3.8%. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production rose by 9%, with a compound annual growth rate of 2.9%.

Wheat bran, sharps, and residues exports from Sub-Saharan Africa have grown for the second year in a row. In 2020, export volume reached 971.6 thousand tonnes, remaining nearly unchanged from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports increased by 12.1%, translating to an annualized rate of 3.9%. The lowest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 706.7 thousand tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 18.5%. In contrast, 2019 experienced the largest increase of 37.1%.

From 2017 to 2020, exports of wheat bran, sharps, and residues from Sub-Saharan Africa were not heavily concentrated in a few key markets. Morocco accounted for 18.9% of exports, Vietnam for 11.1%, and the United Arab Emirates for 10.5%, with these three countries together making up only 40.6% of total export flows.

Over the period from 2017 to 2020, export value grew by 14.6%, with a compound annual growth rate of 4.7%. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 156.6 million US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 36.9%. In 2019, there was a significant decline of 18.8%.

Vietnam accounted for 25.3% of export value, Morocco for 11.4%, and the United Arab Emirates for 9.2%, with these three countries together representing only 45.9% of total flows. The lowest import volume was recorded in 2019 at 65.5 thousand tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 64.3%.

Between 2017 and 2020, however, imports decreased by 31.4%, equating to an annualized rate of decline of 11.8%. The lowest import value was recorded in 2019 at 26.9 million US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 39.9%.
