The wheat bran, sharps and residues market in the GCC region experienced notable fluctuations between 2018 and 2023. Starting from 1.09 million tons in 2018, market volume surged to 1.26 million tons in 2019, representing a substantial increase of over 15%. This peak was followed by a contraction in 2020, bringing the market down to 1.14 million tons.

After the 2020 dip, the market entered a phase of moderate recovery and expansion. Volume grew to 1.16 million tons in 2021 and further to 1.23 million tons in 2022. By 2023, the market stabilized at 1.21 million tons, showing only a minor adjustment from the previous year's level. The overall trajectory across the six-year period points to a net growth, with the market volume higher at the end of the period than at the beginning.

GCC's production of wheat bran, sharps, and residues declined after two years of growth. In 2019, production reached its peak at 644.8 thousand tons, but by 2020 it had fallen to 628.0 thousand tons, representing a 2.6% decrease from the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, overall production increased by 9.3%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 3.0%. The most significant year-on-year increase occurred in 2019, when production surged by 10.4%.

Market performance showed noticeable fluctuations during this period. In 2019, exports hit their lowest point at 59.2 thousand tons, but by 2020 they had rebounded sharply to 221.7 thousand tons, marking a substantial 274.6% increase compared to the previous year. The difference between the high in 2020 and the low in 2019 was 3.7-fold. The largest decline was recorded in 2019, when exports dropped by 62.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, Vietnam, Yemen, and Bangladesh remained the primary markets for GCC's exports of wheat bran, sharps, and residues in volume terms. Vietnam accounted for 22.2% of exports, Yemen for 3.7%, and Bangladesh for 1.4%. Together, these three countries represented 27.3% of total export flows.

GCC's export value of wheat bran, sharps, and residues increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, exports totaled 40.7 million US dollars, reflecting an 18.7% improvement over 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, export value grew by 285.9%, with a compound annual growth rate of 56.8%.

During the 2017–2020 period, Vietnam, Yemen, and Bangladesh were the principal buyers of GCC's wheat bran, sharps, and residues in value terms. Vietnam contributed 12.1% of export value, Yemen 2.4%, and Bangladesh 0.9%. Collectively, these three markets accounted for 15.4% of total export value.

Foreign supplies of wheat bran, sharps, and residues to GCC increased for the third year in a row. In 2020, imports amounted to 729.8 thousand tons, showing a gradual 8.2% improvement compared to 2019. From 2017 to 2020, imports rose by 93.4%, with a compound annual growth rate of 24.6%.

The partner structure for imports in volume terms was fragmented from 2017 to 2020. Tanzania accounted for 16.7% of imports, Kenya for 16.0%, and Sudan for 15.1%. Together, these three countries represented 47.8% of total import flows, with no single country holding a dominant share.

The market exhibited an unstable trend throughout the timeframe. In 2017, import value bottomed out, while it peaked in 2018, with a two-fold difference between these years. In 2020, GCC imported 139.8 million US dollars worth of wheat bran, sharps, and residues, constituting a robust 10.9% increase from 2019. The maximum value was recorded in 2018 at 177.4 million US dollars. The largest decline occurred in 2019, when import value fell by 29.0%, while the largest increase was in 2018, with a surge of 102.7%.

From 2017 to 2020, Sudan, Tanzania, and Kenya played leading roles in imports of wheat bran, sharps, and residues to GCC in value terms. Sudan accounted for 22.8% of import value, Tanzania for 15.7%, and Kenya for 14.8%. Together, these three countries represented 53.3% of total import flows.
