Maize bran, sharps and residues market in Sub-Saharan Africa

Between 2018 and 2020, the market volume for maize bran, sharps and residues in Sub-Saharan Africa expanded from 2 648 thousand tons to 3 488 thousand tons. This surge in 2020 was largely due to the widespread adoption of hermetic storage bags, which significantly reduced post-harvest losses of maize and increased the available raw material for processing into bran and residues. The earlier ease of market entry for local traders in Nigeria's Kano state also supported a more accessible supply structure.

The market volume contracted to 3 179 thousand tons in 2021, as limited access to credit and extension services for smallholder maize farmers in Kogi state constrained productivity and output. A recovery followed, with the market reaching 3 786 thousand tons by 2023. This rebound coincided with agricultural price fluctuations affecting farmer incentives, alongside ongoing government and input supplier initiatives to train farmers in Ondo state, which helped improve maize production and the utilization of its by-products.

In 2020, Sub-Saharan Africa produced 3 523 K t of maize bran, sharps and residues, representing a 32.1% increase compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production grew by 32.4%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.8%. The largest decline occurred in 2019, at 2.1%.

Sub-Saharan Africa's exports of maize bran, sharps and residues declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the region exported 67.9 K t, showing minimal change from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, exports decreased by 14%, with a CAGR of -4.9%. The peak was recorded in 2018 at 104.8 K t, with the largest decline in 2019 at 34.9% and the largest increase in 2018 at 32.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, Vietnam, India, and the Philippines were the main markets for exports in kind, accounting for 10.4%, 1.1%, and 0.5% of exports, respectively. Together, they represented 12.0% of total flows.

Sub-Saharan Africa's export value of maize bran, sharps and residues declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports amounted to 16 781 K $ US, marking a sharp decrease of 27.9% compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports fell by 3.1%, equating to an annualized rate of -1.0%. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 25 284 K $ US, with the largest increase that year at 46.0%.

From 2017 to 2020, Vietnam, India, and the Philippines played leading roles in export value terms, accounting for 13.7%, 0.9%, and 0.5% of exports, respectively. Collectively, they made up 15.2% of total flows.

Imports peaked in 2019 at 72.9 K t and reached their lowest point in 2018 at 28.3 K t, with a 2.6-fold difference between these years. In 2020, Sub-Saharan Africa imported 33.6 K t, a decrease of 53.9% from the previous year. The largest increase was recorded in 2019 at 158.0%.

The largest increase occurred in 2019 at 49.0%.
