From 2018 to 2020, soybean oilcake production in Sub-Saharan Africa rose sharply, driven by South Africa's increased soybean crushing for animal feed and Kenya's Edible Oil Crops Promotion Project which targeted a tripling of domestic edible oil output. This expansion in local supply, alongside South Africa's reduced import reliance, supported market volume growth to 2.9 million tonnes by 2020.

Market volume peaked at 3.2 million tonnes in 2021 before stabilizing near 3.1 million tonnes in 2023. During this period, South Africa's soybean industry continued to invest in processing capacity and export growth, while Kenya faced raw material shortages that increased animal feed costs by over 60% and spurred plans for a new 85,000 tonne per year edible oil plant to utilize local oilseeds.

The region's move toward greater self-sufficiency was underscored by South Africa's sustained industry expansion through breeding levies and technology, which substituted imports with local products and turned the country into a growing exporter of soybean oilcake.

Sub-Saharan Africa's soybean oilcake production has grown for three consecutive years. In 2020, the region produced 2,118 thousand tons of soybean oilcake, marking a 31.0% increase from 2019. From 2017 to 2020, production rose by 67.2%, with an average annual growth rate of 18.7%.

Exports soybean oilcake from Sub-Saharan Africa

Export volumes showed significant volatility during this period. In 2019, exports hit their lowest point at 73 thousand tons, while 2017 saw the highest level. The difference between these years was a factor of 3.6. In 2020, Sub-Saharan Africa exported 258 thousand tons of soybean oilcake, which represents a 253.4% surge compared to 2019. The largest decline occurred in 2018, with a drop of 66.3%.

From 2017 to 2020, France and the Netherlands were the leading markets for Sub-Saharan Africa's soybean oilcake exports in volume terms. France accounted for 5.7% of total flows, while the Netherlands contributed 1.1%.

In 2020, Sub-Saharan Africa exported soybean oilcake worth $142.1 million, up 34.0% from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, export value increased by 35.3%, translating to an annualized growth rate of 10.6%. The largest decline was recorded in 2019, with a 22.2% decrease.

In 2020, Sub-Saharan Africa imported 1,034 thousand tons of soybean oilcake, a 6.1% decrease from 2019. Over the 2017–2020 period, imports fell by 4%, with an average annual decline of 1.3%. The lowest import volume was in 2018 at 1,004 thousand tons, while the peak was in 2019 at 1,101 thousand tons. The largest drop occurred in 2018, down 6.8%, and the biggest increase was in 2019, up 9.7%.

From 2017 to 2020, Argentina, India, and Paraguay were the main sources for soybean oilcake imports into Sub-Saharan Africa by volume. Argentina led with 68.3% of imports, followed by India at 3.7% and Paraguay at 1.4%. Together, these three countries accounted for 73.4% of total import flows.

Sub-Saharan Africa imported soybean oilcake valued at $416.9 million in 2020, a modest 2.6% rise from 2019. The lowest import value was in 2019 at $406.3 million, and the highest was in 2018 at $443.1 million. The largest decrease was in 2019, down 8.3%, while the largest increase was in 2018, up 8.1%.

Throughout 2017–2020, Argentina, India, and Paraguay were the key partners for soybean oilcake imports into Sub-Saharan Africa in value terms. Argentina accounted for 63.7% of imports, India for 4.5%, and Paraguay for 1.5%. Collectively, they represented 69.7% of total import flows.
