Earlier Report Observations

The Hungarian walnut market expanded from 4 526 t in 2018 to 6 673 t by 2022, with its value rising from 21.1 million USD to nearly 30 million USD in 2021. This growth was driven by the steady increase in walnut orchard area, which reached 7 100 ha by 2018, and the adoption of modern varieties by key players like Juglans Hungária Kft., boosting yields. Prices began climbing from 2018, partly due to a favorable exchange rate, and by early 2021, walnut kernel prices were 10% higher year-on-year.

A record harvest estimated at over 15 000 t in 2022 significantly boosted supply, but the market faced a glut due to rising imports, particularly of shelled Ukrainian walnuts, which reached 1 200 t. Coupled with shifting consumer preferences toward smaller and cheaper nuts, this surplus pressured exports and contributed to a market contraction. By 2023, market volume fell to 5 857 t and value declined to 25.3 million USD, even as retail prices continued to rise, reaching 5 720 HUF per kg.

In subsequent years, despite further orchard area expansion, the market continued to narrow due to overproduction and import competition. Processors invested in modernization, such as optical sorters, though the full benefits await younger plantations reaching maturity. Consumer demand also evolved toward more sustainable and health-conscious products, influencing market dynamics.
