Earlier Report Observations

The walnut market in South America contracted sharply to 50 thousand tons in 2019 from 90 thousand tons the previous year, as Chilean growers shifted land toward more profitable crops like cherries and citrus, reducing new walnut orchard plantings and limiting production growth. Market volume rebounded to 74 thousand tons in 2020 after the COVID-19 pandemic disrupted export logistics during the harvest season, temporarily lowering shipments abroad and increasing domestic availability.

Despite persistent water scarcity and the removal of unproductive orchards in Chile, market volume gradually recovered to 85 thousand tons by 2023. Growth slowed as record global harvests, particularly from the United States, suppressed international prices, contributing to a drop in the market's value to $272 million in 2023. Chilean exports were also constrained by a 100% tariff in India and growing competition from Chinese suppliers.
