Earlier Report Observations

Turkey's walnut market volume demonstrated strong growth from 272 thousand tons in 2018 to 425 thousand tons in 2023. This expansion was initially supported by a government policy in 2018 that reduced import taxes on walnuts to 15%, making imported nuts more accessible to meet persistent domestic demand. Concurrently, domestic production began to rise through the adoption of modern farming techniques and organizational efforts, notably with the formation of the Walnut Producers Association in 2020, which helped coordinate growers and improve practices.

Production gains were further reinforced by state support measures, including subsidies for diesel and fertilizers provided to walnut farmers. Despite occasional challenges such as anthracnose disease impacting yields, the focus on enhancing domestic quality and branding intensified, culminating in events like the International Walnut Conference in Istanbul during 2022. After a phase of relative stabilization in 2022, the market volume resumed its upward trajectory in 2023, aided by sustained increases in both local output and import volumes.
