Earlier Report Observations

From 2018 to 2019, the domestic walnut market in Ukraine experienced significant swings driven by export fluctuations. In 2018, a high harvest was partly offset by low nut quality, which constrained export opportunities and kept the domestic market volume at 86.3 thousand t. The following year, walnuts remained a key export commodity, accounting for 64% of fruit export revenue, and a sharp rise in exports to 68.0 thousand t reduced domestic availability, pulling the market size down to 57.9 thousand t.

The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 abruptly changed conditions. Quarantine measures disrupted contracts and cut external demand, slashing exports to 39.0 thousand t. Coupled with another sizable harvest that year, this pushed the domestic market volume up to 74.4 thousand t. In the subsequent period, increased competition from Chinese exports on global markets and ongoing investments into new plantations under the 'Ukrainian Walnut' program, supported by a $15 million loan from international and state banks, helped keep exports relatively subdued. This supported further growth of the domestic market, which reached 82.4 thousand t in 2022.

Russia's full-scale invasion in 2022 led to reduced planted areas in several regions and caused a further export drop due to logistical constraints, underpinning domestic supply. By 2023, Ukrainian exporters had managed to access new markets, increasing exports to 30.6 thousand t, which brought the domestic market volume down to 75.6 thousand t. Throughout the period, state subsidies facilitated the establishment of approximately 6 000 hectares of new orchards between 2018 and 2023, aiming to strengthen the production base.
