The Hungarian dried grape market reached 2 899 t in 2018 but fell to 2 255 t by 2022. This decline was driven by extreme weather conditions, including drought and hail, which reduced the grape harvest and led to a drop in domestic production to 436 t. New vine planting permit rules, implemented earlier, limited production potential, while subsidies for vineyard restructuring supported quality production.

In 2023, market volume continued to decrease to 2 113 t amid low purchase prices and tensions between growers and processors. However, the opening of a new shopping center in Székesfehérvár improved the sales opportunities for local products. By 2024, the market recovered to 2 460 t, and production rose to 655 t, aided by the development of new grape varieties such as Carolas intended for raisin production. Market value also increased to USD 6.7 million, reflecting price changes.

Regulation of viticulture and winemaking, including detailed production and reporting rules, enhanced market transparency. Cooperation between authorities in 2022 to clean the market from abuses also improved the market environment.

The market showed significant fluctuations during this period. Exports reached their lowest point in 2019 at 197 tons, then peaked in 2020 at 348 tons, representing a 1.8-fold increase between these years. In 2021, Hungary exported 311 tons of dried grapes, which was 10.7% lower than the previous year. The largest decline occurred in 2019 with a 35.3% drop, while the strongest growth was recorded in 2020 with a 76.9% increase.

Between 2018 and 2021, Romania was the largest buyer of Hungarian dried grapes, accounting for 53.5% of exports in kind, followed by Croatia at 9.5% and Slovakia at 8.4%. Together, these three countries represented 71.4% of Hungary's total dried grape exports in kind during this period.

The market exhibited considerable volatility over these years. Export values hit their lowest point in 2019 at 555 000 US dollars, then reached their highest level in 2020 at 982 000 US dollars, marking a 1.8-fold increase. In 2021, Hungary's dried grape exports amounted to 872 000 US dollars, showing a significant 11.1% decrease from the previous year. The most substantial decline occurred in 2019 with a 34.6% drop, while the strongest growth was recorded in 2020 with a 76.9% increase.

From 2018 to 2021, Romania led as the top buyer of Hungarian dried grapes in value terms, representing 49.1% of exports, followed by Croatia at 10.8% and Slovakia at 10.7%. Collectively, these three markets accounted for 70.5% of Hungary's total dried grape export value during this four-year period.

Imports dried grapes to Hungary

After two consecutive years of growth, Hungary's imports of dried grapes declined. In 2021, imports totaled 2 424 tons, representing a 14.2% decrease compared to the previous year. The highest import volume was recorded in 2020 at 2 824 tons, which also saw the largest annual increase at 9.8%.

Between 2018 and 2021, Iran was the leading supplier of dried grapes to Hungary in kind, accounting for 28.3% of imports, followed by Turkey at 25.4% and Germany at 13.3%. Together, these three countries supplied 67.0% of Hungary's total dried grape imports in kind during this period.

Hungary's imports of dried grapes declined for the second consecutive year. In 2021, imports amounted to 4 227 000 US dollars, representing a 20.3% reduction compared to 2020. Between 2018 and 2021, imports decreased by 5.7% overall, equivalent to an annualized decline of 1.9%. The highest import value was recorded in 2019 at 5 590 000 US dollars, which also saw the largest annual increase at 24.7%.

From 2018 to 2021, Turkey was the primary supplier of dried grapes to Hungary in value terms, accounting for 24.0% of imports, followed closely by Iran at 23.7% and Germany at 14.8%.
