The Ukrainian treenuts market volume decreased overall from 93 000 tons in 2018 to 86 300 tons in 2023, a period characterized by significant annual volatility. The most pronounced swing was a sharp contraction in 2019, when the market size fell to 66 800 tons.

A strong recovery followed over the next two years, with consumption rising to 84 100 tons in 2020 and then to 91 800 tons in 2021. This upward trend reversed in the final two years of the period, with the market settling at 86 300 tons in 2023.

The gradual decline in domestic production, from 127 400 tons to 107 100 tons, was a consistent feature across these years, while substantial fluctuations in export volumes contributed to the variable annual supply available on the domestic market.

Ukraine's treenuts production declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 113.6 K t of treenuts, marking a modest decrease of 9.9% compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production grew by 4.3%, with a compound annual growth rate of 1.4%. The highest production level was recorded in 2018 at 127.4 K t, which represented the largest annual increase of 17.0%.

In 2020, Ukraine's treenuts output was valued at 284.4 M $ US, showing a strong gain of 10.8% over the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, however, production value decreased by 20.1%, equating to an annualized decline of 7.2%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 256.7 M $ US, while the peak occurred in 2018 at 364.1 M $ US. The most significant drop was in 2019, with a decline of 29.5%.

Exports treenuts to Ukraine

Following two years of growth, Ukraine's treenuts exports declined. In 2020, exports totaled 39 004 t, representing an abrupt fall of 42.7% compared to 2019. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports increased by 26%, with an annualized growth rate of 8.0%. The highest export volume was recorded in 2019 at 68 084 t, which also saw the largest annual increase of 66.0%.

From 2017 to 2020, Turkey (31.1% of exports in kind), Iraq (8.6%), and Azerbaijan (7.8%) were among the largest buyers of treenuts from Ukraine. Together, these three countries accounted for just 47.5% of total exports in kind, indicating a broadly diversified partner base.

Exports in value, M $ US

After two years of growth, Ukraine's treenuts exports in value terms declined. In 2020, exports amounted to 97.7 M $ US, a decrease of 29.5% compared to the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, exports fell by 3.5%, with a compound annual decline of 1.2%. The peak value was recorded in 2019 at 138.5 M $ US, which also experienced the largest annual increase of 18.2%.

During 2017-2020, Ukraine's treenuts exports in value terms were relatively evenly distributed. Turkey (14.9% of exports in value terms), France (10.8%), and Greece (10.1%) together accounted for only 35.9% of total export flows.

Ukraine's treenuts imports increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports stood at 9 528 t, marking a moderate advance of 9.5% year-over-year. Over the 2017-2020 period, imports grew by 85.5%, with a compound annual growth rate of 22.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, the United States (30.4% of imports in kind), Indonesia (21.8%), and Vietnam (14.4%) remained the main suppliers of treenuts to Ukraine. Together, these three countries formed 66.6% of total imports in kind.

Ukraine's treenuts imports increased for the third year in a row. In 2020, import volume reached 45.6 M $ US, marking an increase of 17.4% year-over-year. Between 2017 and 2020, imports surged by 124.6%, equating to an annualized growth rate of 31.0%.

During 2017-2020, the United States (41.7% of imports in value terms), Vietnam (22.4%), and Turkey (10.5%) continued to be the primary suppliers of treenuts to Ukraine. Together, they accounted for 74.7% of total imports in value terms.
