The volume of the treenuts market in Egypt grew from 49 639 tons in 2018 to a peak of 62 109 tons in 2021, before receding to 55 530 tons by 2023. This period of expansion was followed by a market contraction, with import volumes playing a significant role in these fluctuations.

In 2024, import volumes rose to 31 759 tons. This recovery in imports occurred alongside a shift in consumer behavior toward preferring high-quality, defect-free nuts and the spread of wholesale sales areas, which improved market access and variety for consumers.

Egypt's treenuts production increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, Egypt produced 27 585 tonnes of treenuts, showing no significant change from the previous year. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 27 041 tonnes, which also saw the largest decline of 1.9%. The largest increase occurred in 2019 with a 1.7% rise.

Exports treenuts from Egypt

Exports in kind, t

The market showed an unstable trend throughout the period. Export volumes reached their peak in 2018 at 73 tonnes, then fell to their lowest point in 2020 at 9 tonnes, representing a 7.9-fold decrease. In 2020, treenuts shipments from Egypt abroad dropped sharply by 76.5% compared to 2019. The largest increase was recorded in 2018 at 86.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, Syria, Russia, and the Netherlands were the main markets for Egypt's treenuts exports in kind. Syria accounted for 29.0% of exports, Russia for 10.9%, and the Netherlands for 10.4%. Together, these three countries represented 50.3% of total export flows.

Exports in value, M $ US

The market exhibited volatility during these years. Export values varied 6.4 times from the high in 2018 to the low in 2020. In 2020, Egypt exported 0.1 million US dollars worth of treenuts, which was 82.4% lower than in 2019. The maximum value was recorded in 2018 at 0.4 million US dollars, with the largest increase that year at 51.9%.

Throughout 2017–2020, Syria, Russia, and the Netherlands remained the primary markets for Egypt's treenuts exports in value terms. Syria accounted for 26.7% of exports, Russia for 22.6%, and the Netherlands for 11.1%. Collectively, these three countries made up 60.4% of total export flows.

Egypt's imports of foreign treenuts increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports stood at 28 342 tonnes, representing a measured gain of 7.5% from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, imports grew by 114.8%, equating to an annualized rate of 29.0%.

From 2017 to 2020, Vietnam, the United States, and Indonesia consistently led in Egypt's treenuts imports in kind. Vietnam accounted for 32.8% of imports, the United States for 17.8%, and Indonesia for 16.7%. Together, these three countries represented 67.3% of total import flows.

Egypt's treenuts import value increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports came to 128.9 million US dollars, showing a sharp improvement of 34.1% compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, imports rose by 141.8%, equating to an annualized rate of 34.2%.

Over 2017–2020, the United States, Vietnam, and Turkey consistently occupied leading positions in Egypt's treenuts imports in value terms. The United States accounted for 25.8% of imports, Vietnam for 24.5%, and Turkey for 20.9%. Jointly, these three countries accounted for 71.2% of total import flows.
