Earlier Report Observations

The treenuts market in Mauritius, which is primarily supplied through imports, expanded in 2019 following the publication of the Agricultural Guide 2019. This guide promoted organic farming practices, raising consumer interest in organic products including nuts and driving imports to 1 865 t, which pushed the market volume to 1 867 t. A continued decline in the sugar industry indirectly affected broader agricultural sectors in 2020, contributing to a moderate contraction that saw imports fall to 1 666 t and the market size settle at 1 670 t.

In 2021, the adoption of the Ports (Security) Regulations introduced stricter controls on maritime logistics, likely increasing costs and delays for agricultural imports. This contributed to a sharper decline, with nut imports dropping to 1 328 t and the market volume falling to 1 332 t. The market recovered strongly in 2022, however, as surging consumer demand for organic and frozen fruit and vegetable products—with sales rising at least 80% from the previous year—stimulated higher imports of nuts. Imports reached 1 714 t, lifting the overall market volume to 1 716 t.

A severe downturn occurred in 2023 when rising freight costs led to higher prices for imported fruits, directly reducing consumer demand for nuts. This caused imports to plummet to 789 t, which cut the market volume by more than half to 792 t.
