The Hungarian treenuts market experienced significant fluctuations between 2018 and 2023. Market volume grew steadily from 10 280 tons in 2018 to a high of 14 793 tons in 2022, representing an increase of over 40% across the period. This growth was driven by rising domestic production, which nearly doubled from 6 170 tons to 8 690 tons, coupled with consistently high import levels around 7 000 tons per year. However, in 2023 the market contracted sharply to 11 406 tons, as both production and imports fell.

In value terms, the market showed a different pattern, with total value dipping slightly in 2019 despite volume growth, suggesting changes in pricing or product mix. Market value then recovered, reaching $62.1 million in 2022 before declining to $54.9 million in 2023. The smaller percentage drop in value compared to volume in 2023 indicates that average prices remained relatively firm even as quantities traded decreased.

Over the period from 2018 to 2021, production grew by 7.1%, which translates to an average annual growth rate of 2.3%. The lowest production level was recorded in 2020 at 6 030 tonnes, while the highest was in 2019 at 7 320 tonnes. The most significant decline occurred in 2020, with a drop of 17.6%, whereas the largest increase was in 2019, with a rise of 18.6%.

Treenuts production in Hungary increased for the second year in a row. In 2021, the output was valued at 27 321 thousand US dollars, up by 3.6% compared to 2020. From 2018 to 2021, production rose by 2.1%, with a compound annual growth rate of 0.7%. The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 26 290 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 1.8%.

Hungary's treenuts exports declined for the third consecutive year. In 2021, the country exported 1 338 tonnes, representing a modest decrease of 8.6% compared to 2020. Over the period from 2018 to 2021, exports fell by 43.9%, with a compound annual decline rate of 17.5%.

From 2018 to 2021, Germany, Romania, and Italy remained the primary buyers of treenuts from Hungary, accounting for 29.4%, 21.7%, and 14.8% of exports in kind, respectively. Together, these three countries formed 65.9% of total exports in kind.

Hungary's treenuts exports declined for the third year in a row. In 2021, exports amounted to 5 528 thousand US dollars, down by 13.6% from 2020. Between 2018 and 2021, exports decreased by 46.6%, with a compound annual decline rate of 18.9%.

The lowest value was recorded in 2019 at 28 439 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest decline of 7.0%. The largest increase occurred in 2020, with a rise of 21.2%.
