In 2022, local banana production increased to 9 829 t with a yield of 15.5 t per hectare. This growth in output, which pushed the market size to 9 830 t, occurred despite persistent difficulties from black streak disease affecting plantations and fruit development. Planters also warned of potential price rises due to pest impacts on local supply.

Looking ahead, black streak disease continues to affect Mauritian plantations, with research efforts focused on developing resistant varieties. Additionally, thefts from plantations have been reported as a factor influencing local availability. Globally, warmer and wetter climatic conditions are impacting banana production in major exporting countries, which may indirectly influence the Mauritian market through supply and price variations.
