Between 2018 and 2019, the coconut market volume in Mauritius remained stable at around 2,580 t. This period saw the initiation of direct coconut imports from Madagascar, providing a new supply source to meet local ritual and culinary demand. Concurrently, coconut prices began a sustained upward trend, reaching approximately $2.00 per kg by 2019.

The market then entered a volatile phase, with volume dropping by over 11% to 2,307 t in 2020 and falling further to 1,890 t in 2021. A rebound followed in 2022, bringing volume back to 2,298 t, close to pre-contraction levels.

In 2023, market volume plunged by 26% to 1,686 t. This contraction occurred alongside a forecasted price increase to $2.50 per kg and the implementation of stricter national rules on alcohol beverage promotion, which could have indirectly dampened demand for some coconut products.
