The Spanish treenuts market volume expanded from 630 thousand tons in 2018 to 705 thousand tons in 2020, driven by increasing consumer perception of nuts as a healthy snack and the launch of new varieties and convenient individual formats. This trend supported a rise in market value to $4.4 billion in 2020.

Market volume then contracted to 554 thousand tons in 2022, as inflationary pressure pushed average prices higher and adverse climatic conditions, including drought, hampered domestic production. Despite these challenges, the sector saw corporate activity and investment in agricultural technology.

A recovery followed in 2023, with volume reaching 610 thousand tons, boosted by the rebound in production after the previous year's drought and the continued expansion of pistachio cultivation. New companies entered the market, and consumption grew in retail channels, supported by consumer preferences for healthy, traceable, and sustainable products.

Spain's treenuts production volume grew for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 642.6 K t of treenuts, marking a 12.3% increase compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production surged by 107.8%, which translates to an annualized growth rate of 27.6%.

Spain's treenuts production value also rose for the third year in a row. In 2020, the output was valued at 4 194 M $ US, up by 9.8% from 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, production value increased by 105.8%, equating to an annualized rate of 27.2%.

After two years of growth, Spain's treenuts exports declined. In 2020, exports totaled 129.2 K t, reflecting a 4.1% reduction compared to 2019. The peak was recorded in 2019 at 134.8 K t, with the largest increase occurring in 2018 at 14.4%. Overall, from 2017 to 2020, exports grew by 20.7%, corresponding to an annualized rate of 6.5%.

From 2017 to 2020, Italy, Germany, and France were the top destinations for Spain's treenuts exports in volume terms. Italy accounted for 21.6% of exports, Germany for 19.0%, and France for 17.6%, together making up 58.2% of total flows.

Following two years of increase, Spain's treenuts export value decreased. In 2020, exports amounted to 843 M $ US, indicating a 6.3% contraction compared to 2019. The highest value was in 2019 at 900 M $ US, with the largest rise in 2018 at 13.1%. Over the 2017–2020 period, export value rose by 19.5%, equating to an annualized growth rate of 6.1%.

After two years of growth, Spain's treenuts imports fell. In 2020, imports totaled 191.3 K t, marking a 5.7% decline compared to 2019. The maximum volume was recorded in 2019 at 202.8 K t, with the largest increase also in 2019 at 2.8%.
