Rum market in Finland

The Finnish rum market volume grew from 1.3 million liters in 2018 to 1.6 million liters in 2020. This expansion was primarily driven by the reduction of state-owned Alko's retail monopoly on alcohol, which drastically increased rum's availability to over 5,000 stores by late 2018, up from around 350 stores the previous year.

After peaking in 2020, market volume declined over the next three years, falling to 1.0 million liters in 2023. The sharp rise in food prices starting from mid-2021 altered consumer behavior, prompting a shift toward more affordable products and reducing demand for rum.

In 2024, the market rebounded to 1.2 million liters. Evolving consumer preferences, including shifts in holiday purchasing patterns, and the growing emphasis on digitalization and personalized marketing supported this recovery.

Rum exports from Finland have risen for the second year in a row. In 2020, exports reached 140 thousand liters, representing a 36.8% increase from 2019. However, from 2017 to 2020, overall exports fell by 21.4%, with an average annual decline of 7.7%. The lowest volume was recorded in 2018 at 97 thousand liters, which saw the largest drop of 45.4%.

From 2017 to 2020, Sweden, Estonia, and Russia were consistently the top destinations for Finland's rum exports in volume terms. Sweden accounted for 25.0% of exports, Estonia for 22.1%, and Russia for 15.0%, together making up 62.1% of total export flows.
