The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 shifted consumer behavior toward online shopping and affected supply chains, leading to a market volume increase to 2 925 thousand liters. In 2021, the implementation of the EU VIS Regulation (EU) 2021/1134 introduced changes to personal data handling in customs and border procedures, which complicated import processes and significantly reduced whisky imports, causing total market volume to drop to 2 497 thousand liters.

By 2022, the market rebounded sharply to 3 150 thousand liters, aided by greater visibility of domestic whisky products and a shift in marketing strategies toward social media channels. After this peak, market volume moderated to 2 877 thousand liters in 2023 and further to 2 792 thousand liters in 2024.

Whisky exports from Finland have risen for the third year in a row. In 2020, exports reached 1 299 thousand liters, showing a sharp increase of 102.9% compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports surged by 142%, equivalent to an annualized growth rate of 34.3%.

From 2017 to 2020, Sweden, Russia, and Denmark were the main destinations for Finland's whisky exports in volume terms. Sweden accounted for 53.4% of exports, Russia for 17.1%, and Denmark for 9.8%, together making up 80.3% of the total.

Whisky exports from Finland in value terms have declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, exports amounted to 5 790 thousand US dollars, reflecting a significant decrease of 17.1% compared to the previous year. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports fell by 19.2%, with an average annual decline of 6.9%. The highest value was recorded in 2018 at 7 990 thousand US dollars, which also saw the largest increase of 11.4%.
