The fresh pea market in Central Asia expanded from 7 536 tons in 2018 to 8 609 tons in 2020, largely driven by a near quadrupling of import volumes. This growth coincided with geopolitical trade sanctions reshaping regional supply routes and the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, which disrupted global logistics and bolstered demand for staple foods.

Market volume fell to 7 470 tons in 2021 as imports collapsed amidst global supply chain disruptions and currency volatility, making peas harder and more expensive to source. A recovery to 7 945 tons followed in 2022, supported by renewed import activity and the implementation of new packaging and labeling rules that aimed to streamline market access and transparency.

A dramatic surge to 10 567 tons occurred in 2023, fueled by a massive import increase to over 3 000 tons. This spike aligned with robust export demand from China and India for Siberian peas and a tightening of global supply following a poor harvest in Canada, which opened import opportunities for the region.
