From 2018 to 2020, Algeria's pea market volume increased from 186.2 thousand tons to 209.4 thousand tons. This expansion was supported by Agrana Fruit's investment in the local processor ELAFRUITS, which strengthened processing capacity for pea concentrates and preserves, alongside the national plan to modernize wholesale fruit and vegetable markets, improving distribution efficiency.

The market declined to 204.4 thousand tons in 2021 due to a shortage of certified pea seeds that constrained planting areas and reduced domestic production. Volume stabilized at 203.5 thousand tons in 2022, partly because the launch of a new automated production line at the first national cannery aimed to boost output of canned peas and lower unit costs.

Growth resumed in 2023, with market volume reaching 212.8 thousand tons. Izdihar SpA emerged as the dominant player in the canned pea segment, holding a 33% retail market share, while the government continued its wholesale market modernization program. In 2024, a temporary VAT exemption on fresh peas was introduced to support consumer purchasing power.

Pea production in Algeria grew for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 209.4 thousand tons of peas, representing a 4.7% increase from the previous year. Over the 2017-2020 period, production rose by 59.4%, with a compound annual growth rate of 16.8%.
