The most significant expansions occurred in 2021 and 2022, when market volume grew by 33.6% and 46.3% respectively, reaching its peak.

In 2023, the market contracted by 6.6% to 200.9 thousand tons, coinciding with a rise in imports to 13.5 thousand tons and exports to 10.1 thousand tons. Production remained high although it decreased from 221.6 thousand tons in 2022 to 197.5 thousand tons in 2023.

In value terms, the market's worth increased from USD 214 million in 2018 to USD 485 million in 2023, despite a temporary dip in 2020. Value growth outpaced volume growth, indicating rising prices or shifts in product mix.

Peas production in Sub-Saharan Africa has increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the region produced 105.8 K t of peas, marking a modest increase of 7.3% compared to the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, production grew by 80%, which translates to an annualized growth rate of 21.6%.

The market showed an unstable trend over the period. Exports reached their lowest point in 2019, then peaked in 2017, with a 5.4-fold difference between these years. From 2017 to 2020, India, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom were notable buyers of peas from Sub-Saharan Africa, but their combined share was not dominant. India accounted for 20.4% of exports in kind, the Netherlands for 6.5%, and the United Kingdom for 4.2%, totaling only 31.1% of total exports in kind.

After a two-year decline, peas shipments from Sub-Saharan Africa to abroad increased. In 2020, exports totaled 14 421 K $ US, which is 5.0% higher than in 2019. From 2017 to 2020, exports decreased by 46.2%, equating to an annualized decline of 18.7%. The minimum value was recorded in 2019 at 13 732 K $ US. The largest decline was in 2018, with a drop of 33.9%.

During 2017–2020, the Netherlands, India, and the United Kingdom were important buyers of peas from Sub-Saharan Africa in value terms. The Netherlands accounted for 21.0% of exports in value, India for 13.0%, and the United Kingdom for 9.2%, but their combined share reached only 43.2% of total exports in value terms. The remaining 56.8% was distributed among many other partners.

The data reveals irregular changes, indicating a volatile market environment. Imports hit their lowest point in 2018, then peaked in 2020, with a 3.9-fold variation between these years. In 2020, foreign peas supplies to Sub-Saharan Africa amounted to 10 477 t, showing an increase of 47.4% compared to the previous year. The minimum value was recorded in 2018 at 2 687 t. The largest decline occurred in 2018, with a drop of 28.4%, while the largest increase was in 2019, with a gain of 164.6%.

In 2017–2020, the partner structure for imports in kind was balanced rather than concentrated. The United States accounted for 18.3% of imports in kind, Italy for 12.3%, and Ukraine for 11.0%, jointly representing 41.6% of total flows. Many other countries accounted for the remaining 58.4%.

Cross-border shipments of peas to Sub-Saharan Africa have increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, imports reached 6 720 K $ US, representing a steep gain of 25.8% year-over-year. From 2017 to 2020, imports increased by 119.9%, equating to an annualized growth rate of 30.0%.

The partner structure of imports in value terms in 2017–2020 remained fragmented. The United States accounted for 18.7% of imports in value terms, Italy for 11.5%, and Ukraine for 7.6%, together accounting for only 37.8% of total flows, with no single country exceeding a dominant share.
