In the period from 2018 to 2020, the fresh pear market in Ukraine was influenced by the entry of new players and active involvement of state-owned agricultural companies. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 caused supply chain disruptions and shifted consumer preferences towards healthy eating and local products, contributing to a stabilization of the market volume around 160,000 t.

Market volume rebounded to 172,100 t in 2021, driven by significant investments in modernizing production facilities and adopting innovative storage technologies. Concurrently, evolving consumer behavior showed increased demand for organic and eco-friendly produce, which encouraged product diversification.

The full-scale war in 2022 severely disrupted production and logistics, leading to a sharp contraction in market size to 150,700 t. Recovery efforts began in 2023 with new entrants increasing competition and the implementation of stricter quality and safety certification requirements. By 2024, the market saw further stabilization supported by the launch of new production capacities and updated international labeling standards.

Ukraine's pear production declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, the country produced 152.3 thousand tons of pears, marking a slight decrease of 1.9% from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, production fell by 7.9%, which translates to an average annual decline of 2.7%. The highest output was recorded in 2018 at 183.2 thousand tons. The most significant drop occurred in 2019, with a 15.2% decrease, while the largest increase was in 2018, at 10.7%.

Ukraine's pear exports fell for the third consecutive year. In 2020, the country exported 27 tons of pears, representing a sharp decline of 67.6% compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports plummeted by 96.4%, averaging an annual decrease of 66.8%.

From 2017 to 2020, Belarus was the leading buyer of pears from Ukraine, accounting for 79.9% of total exports by volume, with other countries making up the remainder.

Pear exports from Ukraine decreased for the third year in a row. In 2020, export value amounted to 14 thousand US dollars, down 46.5% year-over-year. Between 2017 and 2020, exports dropped by 94.6%, with an average annual decline of 62.2%.

During 2017–2020, Belarus and Moldova dominated Ukraine's pear exports in value terms, together accounting for 89.0% of total flows, while other destinations had smaller shares.

The market showed an unstable trend over this period. Import levels varied significantly, with a 3.7-fold difference between the low of 1 924 tons in 2018 and the high of 7 042 tons in 2020. In 2020, Ukraine imported 7 042 tons of pears, up 43.1% from the previous year. The largest decline was in 2018, at 2.5%, while the biggest increase occurred in 2019, with a 155.8% rise.

From 2017 to 2020, the main suppliers of pears to Ukraine were the Netherlands (38.4% of import volume), Poland (24.5%), and Turkey (13.4%), together comprising 76.3% of total imports in kind.

Throughout 2017–2020, the Netherlands (40.9% of import value), Poland (23.2%), and Turkey (10.7%) formed the core group of markets for Ukraine's pear imports in value terms, together representing 74.8% of total flows.
