Earlier Report Observations
From 2018 to 2020, the fresh pear market volume in Russia declined from 337 thousand tons to 292 thousand tons. In 2018, a health and wellness trend increased consumption of fresh natural products, including pears, supporting the market. However, in 2019, sanctions and geopolitical risks reduced pear imports by 16%, leading to a market volume drop. The COVID-19 pandemic in 2020 affected logistics and consumer preferences, but the market stabilized with a slight decline.
In 2021, the market volume grew to 304 thousand tons, aided by an increasing share of Russian producers and an 8.5% rise in domestic pear production. Yet in 2022 and 2023, sanctions and the weakening ruble drove up prices for imported fruits and reduced pear imports. This, along with rising prices for fresh pears, lowered demand: the market volume fell to 267 thousand tons in 2023, and pear production dropped by 14%.
Throughout the period, the development of greenhouse complexes and new production capacities in the agro-sector supported domestic pear output. Shifts in consumer preferences toward natural and healthy products, along with continued logistical changes due to sanctions, further shaped the market dynamics.
