Earlier Report Observations

The market volume for fresh currants and gooseberries in Ukraine declined over the 2018–2023 period, falling from 37.5 thousand tonnes to 29.9 thousand tonnes. Initially, investment in berry farming and the emerging frozen segment provided support. However, poor weather conditions in 2020 reduced yields, while the full-scale invasion in 2022 severely disrupted agricultural production and cut off traditional sales regions. A temporary recovery in 2021 was driven by stronger consumer interest in healthy eating.

Structural adaptations occurred alongside the overall contraction. Demand for frozen berries grew, fueled by export opportunities to the EU and the product's longer shelf life. Changes in consumer behavior, including a rise in online shopping, opened new channels for berry sales. Nevertheless, these developments could not compensate for the supply-side challenges and external shocks that shrank the total market.
