Between 2018 and 2019, Ukraine's fresh melon market volume increased from 103 thousand tons to 118 thousand tons. This growth aligned with a broader trend in the food industry toward innovation and assortment renewal, which likely stimulated consumer demand for fresh produce like melons. Promotional activities and flexible pricing strategies observed in other fresh food segments, such as dairy, also supported consumption during this period.

After reaching a peak in 2019, both production and market size declined in 2020 and saw a partial recovery in 2021, with the market volume reaching 110 thousand tons. The subsequent period from 2022 brought a severe downturn as unfavorable weather conditions—including heavy rains, sharp temperature fluctuations, and heat waves—damaged melon cultivation across Ukraine. These conditions directly reduced domestic output, causing production to fall from 103 thousand tons in 2021 to 59 thousand tons in 2023 and market volume to drop to 67 thousand tons.

The weather-driven supply shortage led to significant price increases, further constraining market activity. Concurrently, the retail environment for fresh produce evolved, with supermarkets enhancing product presentation zones, a shift that helped maintain some sales momentum despite the overall market contraction.

After two years of growth, melon production in Ukraine declined. In 2020, the country produced 94.8 thousand tonnes of melons, marking a significant 17.1% decrease compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, production increased by 14%, which translates to an annualized growth rate of 4.5%. The peak was reached in 2019 with 114.4 thousand tonnes, while the largest annual increase occurred in 2018 at 23.6%.

In 2020, the value of melon output in Ukraine was 19 775 thousand US dollars, reflecting a sharp 25.6% drop from the previous year. From 2017 to 2020, production value decreased by 26.1%, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of -9.6%. The highest increase was recorded in 2019 at 6.5%.

Exports melons to Ukraine

Ukraine's melon exports have grown for the third year in a row. In 2020, the country exported 2 086 tonnes of melons, showing a substantial 80.8% rise compared to 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, exports surged by 521.8%, with a CAGR of 83.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, Poland and Moldova were the primary destinations for Ukraine's melon exports in volume, together accounting for 85.7% of total shipments, while other markets made up the remaining share.

Ukraine's melon exports have increased for the third consecutive year. In 2020, export value reached 435 thousand US dollars, which is 62.3% higher than in 2019. Between 2017 and 2020, export value grew by 303.3%, equating to an annualized rate of 59.2%.

Between 2017 and 2020, Poland, Moldova, and Belarus led as the top buyers of Ukrainian melons in value terms, with shares of 57.9%, 19.0%, and 12.0%, respectively. Together, they represented 88.9% of total export value.

Ukraine's melon imports have risen for the third year in a row. In 2020, imports totaled 6 393 tonnes, indicating a sharp 32.7% year-over-year increase. From 2017 to 2020, import volume expanded by 740.7%, with a CAGR of 103.3%.
