The pear market in Kazakhstan expanded from 29 449 tons in 2018 to 47 383 tons in 2023. This growth was primarily driven by a sharp increase in imports, which more than doubled over the period. Domestic production rose until 2021, reaching 16 403 tons, supported by a significant jump in yield per hectare from 5.1 t/ha to 13 t/ha due to the adoption of modern cultivation techniques like drip irrigation and fertigation on demonstration plots.

Post-pandemic recovery in 2020 and a sustained consumer shift towards healthier, natural foods bolstered demand for pears. From 2022, the market began benefiting from the first harvests of new pear varieties developed by Kazakh breeders, aiming to reduce import dependence. Simultaneously, the growth of retail food trade and increased exports of fruits from Kazakhstan provided additional momentum to the sector's development.

Kazakhstan's pear production has increased for the second consecutive year. In 2020, the country produced 14 345 tons of pears, marking a modest 3.5% increase compared to the previous year. The lowest production level was recorded in 2018 at 13 634 tons, which also saw the largest decline of 4.2%.

Exports pears from Kazakhstan

Kazakhstan's pear exports have declined for the second year in a row. In 2020, exports amounted to 135 tons, representing a significant contraction of 67.4% compared to 2019. Over the period from 2017 to 2020, exports decreased by 69.2%, which translates to an annualized decline rate of 32.5%. The highest export volume was recorded in 2018 at 458 tons, which also experienced the largest increase of 4.2%.

From 2017 to 2020, Russia dominated Kazakhstan's pear export structure, accounting for 73.5% of total export flows. Other markets played a less significant role during this period.

The market performance showed noticeable fluctuations during this period. Exports peaked in 2017 and reached their lowest point in 2020, with a 37-fold difference between these years. In 2020, Kazakhstan exported pears worth 4 thousand US dollars, reflecting an abrupt decrease of 93.2% compared to the previous year. The largest increase was recorded in 2019 at 91.5%.

Kazakhstan's pear imports have declined for the second consecutive year. In 2020, imports totaled 14 562 tons, showing a moderate decline of 9.4% compared to the previous year. The highest import volume was recorded in 2018 at 16 273 tons, which also saw the largest increase of 10.9%.

From 2017 to 2020, Belgium (43.7% of imports in kind), the Netherlands (21.5%), and China (15.3%) were the main sources for Kazakhstan's pear imports. Together, these three countries accounted for 80.5% of total import flows.

After two years of growth, Kazakhstan's pear imports from abroad declined. In 2020, import volume amounted to 8 975 thousand US dollars, down by 15.1% compared to the previous year. Between 2017 and 2020, imports decreased by 3.7%, equating to an annualized decline rate of 1.2%. The highest import value was recorded in 2019 at 10 572 thousand US dollars, which also experienced the largest increase of 10.4%.

Throughout 2017–2020, Belgium (38.7% of imports in value terms), the Netherlands (25.9%), and China (17.2%) played the leading roles in Kazakhstan's pear imports by value. Collectively, these three countries accounted for 81.7% of total import flows.
