Earlier Report Observations

In 2018, the fresh cherry market in Ukraine reached 299.7 thousand tonnes, driven by the loss of the Russian market and a successful reorientation of exports towards the EU, alongside the start of mass domestic sales. Ukraine also became the world's second-largest cherry producer. However, the market volume contracted to 233.2 thousand tonnes in 2019.

The market recovered over the next two years, peaking at 257.1 thousand tonnes in 2021. From 2022 onward, the war significantly impacted production and logistics, reducing the market volume to 239.3 thousand tonnes. During this period, the EU officially opened its market to Ukrainian cherry planting material, while unfavorable weather in the EU lowered its own cherry output, raising demand for Ukrainian produce.

In 2023, the market volume continued to decline, reaching 216.7 thousand tonnes, despite sustained high demand from the EU due to ongoing weather-related production shortfalls. By 2024, the cherry sales season started earlier owing to favorable weather, and wholesale prices fell by 20%, reflecting ongoing market adjustments.
